AI (Artificial Insemination)
Fresh and Frozen Semen
SG Stud are able to offer mare owners AI services on site for fresh/chilled and frozen semen. We are able to liaise with stallion owners on your behalf to organise the collection, transportation and pick up of semen for your mare.
SG Stud consistently has over a 90% first cycle conception rate with chilled semen that we believe is due to our more holistic approach as well as our relaxing environment and management techniques. Our frozen semen rates are fairly good as well with an approximate 75% taking on the first cycle.
Embryo Transfer
SG Stud is proud to be able to offer an embryo transfer service. This is a highly popular service for competition mares to enable them to have a foal and still be able to keep competing. It is also a great option for older mares who maybe have uterine issues that mean they are no longer able to carry a foal to term themselves.
EMBRYO FREEZING - We can also offer clients an embryo freezing service. This can be useful if upon flushing a mare we end up with two embryos, but only have one recipient mare prepared.
Embryo freezing can also offer mare owners the opportunity to breed their mare later in a breeding season - to be able to freeze the embryo to be implanted at the beginning of next season for an early foal.
RECIPIENT MARES - At this stage, we have a limited number of our own recipient mares but mare owners are more than welcome to source their own recipient mare for use.
Foaling Down
SG Stud has a very successful foaling down operation for such a small boutique stud. We have a slighter longer season than most, running from August through to late March to cater for Sporthorse foalings. We have also been known to foal down mares that have been imported in foal from the Northern Hemisphere, so please do get in touch if you require a foaling service out of season.
When your mare arrives she will be paddocked with mares due in the same month. When she starts to foal we bring her into our foaling down area that is lit and close to all of our foaling equipment. This area is also easily accessible to our on call vet should we require veterinary assistance.
We are one of the few studs that carry our own stock of frozen colostrum, so should your mare’s colostrum immunoglobulin levels be low upon testing, we have our own to supplement your foal.
We are also able to perform an igG test on site for your foal at 12 hours to make sure that their immunity from the mares colostrum is on track.
IMPORTANT NOTICE – BROODMARE VACCINATIONS
Please ensure your mare has been vaccinated against Strangles, Tetanus and Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) prior to arriving. Vaccinations need to be done at 5, 7 and 9months gestation to be completely covered. In some cases we can vaccinate for you.

Thoroughbred Walk In, Walk Out Services
SG Stud can provide clients with Thoroughbred mares a unique walk in, walk out service to stallions located within the Waikato and Auckland districts.
Not only are we able to prep your mare ready for service and liaise with the stallion manager directly, but we are able to also organise transport to and from the stud the stallion resides at.
